Vadm. Houser, then OP-05, presented Spangenberg with his aviator wings at Spangenberg's retirement party. The aviator wings won a prominent place in his home. It appeared as if that and selection into the Golden Eagles were the two most significant awards for him. Perhaps this was because they represented ongoing ties to the Naval Aviation community.
